Re: Recommended Juniper switch and router for a home lab

OK, can't figure out how to start a new thread so hopefully somehow, people will see my question(s) here . . . .

Attached is a MS Word document showing my progress in using the CLI to configure my Juniper EX2200 switches . . . . and I have made good progress!  I now can install the OS (version 12.3R12.4) on the switch; zeroize a switch; do the basic configuration so that I now know how to configure a hostname, add accounts, activate services, get the me0 (management interface) going, and use the interface-range command to add multiple interfaces to VLANs I have created.  I have verified that I can ping between devices that are connected to ports that are in the same VLAN.  So the attached document has all this with the correct commands underlined in blue.

But I so far have had zero success in trunking one EX2200 switch to another EX2200 switch . . . . I am still working on it but it appears to be a challenging process - I have to create a Virtual Chassis Port . . . .  in Cisco, connecting one switch to a second switch is so much easier . . . !  In Cisco, you can just connect two ports together and a trunk will automatically be created.  You can then immediately connect one device on one port on one switch, connect a second device on a port on the second switch, and start communicating between the two.  Through the Cisco VTP (built in), the switches will automatically add VLANs from other switches.

With Cisco being so much more "user friendly", no really sure why I would be interested in using a Juniper switch . . . .

And I haven't even started learning about Juniper routers . . . .

So if anyone can assist me in getting my two EX2200's connected, I'd sure appreciate it.

And please tell me how to start new question.

Thank you,

David Adams
